Patient Education

Haemodialysis

When kidney function is severely impaired, haemodialysis may help with fluid and toxin control as part of specialist treatment planning.

  • •Dialysis may be considered in advanced kidney failure and in selected cases of severe chronic kidney disease or inflammatory kidney conditions.
  • •Care includes vascular access planning, supervised dialysis sessions, and close monitoring throughout treatment.
  • •Ongoing support with fluid balance, nutrition, medication, and lifestyle remains essential.

Kidney Transplant Care

For suitable patients with advanced kidney disease, transplantation may be considered within a multidisciplinary referral pathway.

  • •The transplant journey may involve donor matching, medical evaluation, surgery, post-operative support, and long-term monitoring.
  • •Living donor and deceased donor pathways may both be considered where appropriate.

FAQ Highlights

Clear answers about hypertension and long-term risk.

These are common educational questions discussed during kidney health assessments.

Can hypertension be cured?

Hypertension is a chronic condition that cannot be cured, but it can be effectively managed. With proper treatment, including lifestyle changes and medication, blood pressure can be controlled, and the risk of complications can be significantly reduced. Regular monitoring and ongoing management are important to maintain optimal blood pressure control.

Can hypertension lead to complications?

Yes, uncontrolled hypertension can lead to severe health complications. It elevates the likelihood of developing cardiovascular conditions such as heart attack, heart failure, stroke and kidney disease. Hypertension can also contribute to the development of other conditions, including vision problems, sexual dysfunction, and cognitive impairment.

Can hypertension be prevented?

Although certain risk factors for hypertension, like age and family history, remain unchangeable, the adoption of a healthy lifestyle can substantially diminish the likelihood of developing hypertension. This entails maintaining a healthy weight, adhering to a balanced diet low in sodium and abundant in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, incorporating regular physical activity, limiting alcohol consumption, and refraining from smoking.
